It comes as a similar bill, HB 999, is primed to go before the full House.

The Republican-majority Florida Legislature has followed the governor's lead by introducing legislation this year to rein in DEI programs at each of the state's 12 public universities.

With a proposed bill that would restrict DEI initiatives at public colleges and universities in Florida, some current students are asking if they'd have chosen their schools if this had happened before now.

The proposed bill also targets funding for diversity, equity and inclusion programs.

California Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom appeared with more than a dozen students and faculty near New College, which DeSantis has remade by appointing a conservative majority to its board of trustees.

An email sent to “friends with college-age students” touted New College as “the Hillsdale College of the southeast.”

The event comes as state lawmakers seek to limit what topics can be taught at Florida's public colleges and universities.

New College of Florida is known for its progressive approach to education and attracting a liberal student body. Now, the school finds itself caught in the crosshairs of America’s culture war.

They addressed several bills under consideration, including legislation that would to eliminate diversity programs and critical race theory from higher education.

Said a reporter for the Chronicle of Higher Education: "It really goes beyond what we’ve seen I think in almost any other state.”

Suzanne Sherman is stepping down as Provost at New College of Florida in Sarasota. She was a faculty member at the small liberal arts school for over 30 years.

Hampshire College, a 700-student institution in Amherst, Massachusetts, has offered admission to students at Sarasota's New College and is matching their cost of tuition.
