On Jan. 15, the retailer said it was seeking approval from a bankruptcy court to begin the process of selling "substantially all of its assets" under Chapter 11. That will include 36 stores in Florida.

Walmart is not the first national retail chain to cut off cigarette sales even on a trial basis, but it is the largest.

Sears Holdings Corp., which controls both Sears and Kmart, says it has "identified approximately 100 non-profitable stores."
