WUSF Public Media formally opened its new studio on the campus of USF St. Petersburg with a ribbon-cutting ceremony last Friday.
"This studio gives us great new opportunities in St. Petersburg," WUSF Public Media General Manager JoAnn Urofsky said during the ceremony. "It gives us a home closer to the action when we cover news and newsmakers in St. Petersburg.
"More than that, it gives us an opportunity to integrate and become part of USF St. Pete and to work with talented USF St. Petersburg journalism students in a new venue," Urofsky added. "Best of all is that the beneficiaries will be our audience, who will benefit from our new capabilities here."
St. Petersburg Mayor Rick Kriseman and USFSP Regional Chancellor Sophia Wisniewska were among the dignitaries in attendance.
"Having an award-winning NPR affiliate on our campus is something we should all be proud of," Wisniewska said. "It will be an excellent opportunity for our journalism students, who can gain valuable on-air experience, working closely with seasoned professionals. I particularly look forward to the stories our students produce through the Neighborhood News Bureau in Midtown, an important part of this city where Mayor Kriseman is focusing much needed attention."
“I want to congratulate our neighbors at USF St. Pete on the opening of this studio,” Kriseman added. “This is a great addition to an already great campus, and a wonderful opportunity for students as well. I look forward to hearing more news and information from WUSF right here in St. Petersburg.”
The new studio is located in the Peter Rudy Wallace Center for Teachers, home to the USFSP Journalism and Media Studies Department.
