Fraternity in Oklahoma Case Has Troubled History at Florida Schools

Sigma Alpha Epsilon, which had its chapter at the University of Oklahoma shut down after video surfaced showing fraternity brothers singing a song containing racial slurs, has had problems at chapters throughout Florida in the past.

The Miami Herald reports chapters at the University of South Florida, University of Florida, Florida State University and the University of Central Florida have all been closed or placed on probation for issues dealing with drinking or hazing of new pledges.

In 2012, SAE at the University of South Florida was suspended for four years for violating three university policies outlined in the Standards for Student Organization Conduct including harassment, hazing and a failure to adhere to organization, local and national policies, according to an article in the Oracle, USF’s student newspaper. “There is no active chapter at USF currently,” said Lara Wade-Martinez, who directs media and public affairs for USF, who would only confirm that the fraternity was suspended for violating university policies.

The Florida State chapter of SAE was closed for several years after an investigation in 2000 found underage drinking and a number of hazing incidents.

According to the Orlando Sentinel, the SAE chapter at UCF was closed in 2006 after a hazing incident involving alcohol and drugs that ended with three students being taken to the hospital. While the fraternity was barred from reopening for at least six years, the chapter was re-colonized in 2014.

The University of Florida chapter of SAE was on probation through the beginning of this year following hazing charges in fall 2010. The chapter had been on deferred suspension through last December, and also received educational sanctions that required community service and other punishments.

Sigma Alpha Epsilon currently has about 240 active chapters and colonies and about 15,000 mostly white members. It's one of the nation's oldest fraternities, forming in 1856 at the University of Alabama.
