The University of South Florida sits among such intellectual titans as the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Stanford University and the California Institute of Technology on the top ten list of U.S. patents issued to American universities in 2014.
USF's 104 patents issued by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office ranked 10th nationally and 13th among all public and private universities worldwide. It's the fifth year in a row USF has placed in the top 15 worldwide.
According to the National Academy of Inventors, the University of California System topped the U.S. list with 453 patents issued. MIT was second (275 patents), with Stanford third (182).
Among state schools, the University of Florida Research Foundation placed 15th in the nation (87 patents), the University of Central Florida ranked 23rd (66) and Florida State University was 52nd (30). Among public U.S. universities, USF was 4th, UF 7th, UCF 12th and FSU 30th.
“The growth of technology and innovation is essential to the success of a university,” said Paul R. Sanberg, USF senior vice president for research, innovation and economic development. “Invention based on university technology remains a significant factor in economic development. We are proud of our faculty, students and staff who make an impact on Tampa Bay and the state of Florida and are converting their research into patents and commercialization activities that benefit society.”
California and MIT also topped the worldwide list, with China's Tsinghua University taking third (230 patents).
